Buddhist Divination Text
This Buddhist divination text is from Thailand and is likely at least 100 years old. Written in Old Thai, the text describes the six realms of existence in the Samsara, or cycle of rebirth, and how to achieve a favorable state in the next cycle. It combines mainstream Buddhist beliefs with local Thai lore.
Buddhism is the most popular religion practiced in Thailand, with the Theravada school of thought predominating. Theravada Buddhism emphasizes the Buddha’s teachings that liberation from earthly suffering comes through personal enlightenment.
This Buddhist divination text is featured in the virtual exhibit Faith: Five World Religions. The Museum will host a group of Tibetan Buddhist Monks in October. You can learn more about our schedule of events here.
