Balinese Offerings
August 23, 2022 – April 22, 2023
Offerings are an important part of daily life in Bali. Part of Indonesia, the island’s culture draws on Hindu religious practices that emphasize giving as an act of devotion. Flowers, incense, fruits, snacks, and money are grouped into offerings and dedicated at temples or at home. Meaningful objects are one way to make an offering, but performances can also be dedicated to gods and ancestors. Gamelan orchestras perform spirited music to accompany sacred rites. Wayang shadow puppets act out religious epics. This exhibit features artistic objects from several Balinese traditions and connects them to their religious meanings.
