Outreach Kits

The Lam Museum’s outreach kits cover a number of different subjects and are the perfect tool for enhancing your classroom lessons. Kits contain hands-on objects, photographs, activities, labels, instructions, and historical materials. The kits meet curriculum standards for specific grade levels, but can be used by any classes, with the level of study and complexity of content determined by the teacher.

Kits are available for a $25 non-refundable rental fee per week (Becoming Human is $40 per week). School delivery within Forsyth County is available for an additional fee.  To reserve a kit, please contact the Museum at 336.758.5282 or lammuseum@wfu.edu.


African Music (Kindergarten, Unit 4) (1st grade, Unit 2) (2nd grade, Unit 1)

This kit includes an assortment of African instruments for students to examine and play. Included is an information packet with photographs and suggested activities.

Animals in African Art (Kindergarten, Unit 4)
(1st grade, Unit 2) (2nd grade, Unit 1)

This kit has hands-on one and two-dimensional African art with animal themes and examines African approaches to art. Objects, labels with stories and proverbs, picture card observational activities, and teacher’s guide are included.

Money, Money, Money! (Kindergarten, Unit 3) 
(1st grade, Unit 4) (2nd grade, Unit 4)

Money is used to buy all the things that satisfy our wants and needs, but how do we define money. What does it mean to barter or trade? How do people decide the price or value of goods? Using artifacts students will explore some of the different materials that have been used as money around the world.

This kit is designed to be used as a lesson starter.

Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead (All grades)

It’s not Mexican Halloween. Celebrating the dead is a tradition found in parts of Mesoamerica that has a long history. The kit includes images, artifacts, activities, and stories that can be used to teach students the true meaning of the celebration.


Chinese New Year (All grades)

In China, the most important holiday is New Year’s. This kit includes images, artifacts, activities, and stories that can be used to teach students how people decorate, what they eat, and why Chinese’s New Year is at a different time of the year.


Kodomo No Hi/Japanese Children’s Day (All grades)

Japanese Children’s Day is a special holiday just for children. This kit includes images, artifacts, activities, and stories that can be used to introduce students to the purpose, foods, kites, and dolls used to celebrate children on this day.


Fun and Games (4th grade, Unit 1) (5th grade, Unit 1)

This kit provides an assortment of Native American games ready to play. Kit includes instructions and historical background materials.

North Carolina Archaeology (6th grade, Unit 1)

Archaeology helps shape our understanding of cultures and civilizations. But how is the work done? What happens to the objects? This kit contains an array of authentic Yadkin River Valley Native American artifacts with information panels about archaeology and discoveries into the lives of the first Carolinians.

Sticks, Stones and Bones (6th grade, Unit 1)

How early people lived and survived are questions students struggle to answer. This kit includes images, objects, and artifacts to help students discover how early people used natural resources to meet their housing, clothing and food needs.

Human Evolution (6th grade, Unit 1)

The evolution and immigration of people has been a source of debate for centuries. This kit includes images, games, artifacts, and reproduction skulls to help students explore how people developed and began to develop civilizations.

Religion (6th grade, Units 6, 9, 10)
(9th grade, Units 2, 4)

Religious beliefs and faith have been and are a driving force for people around the world. These kits includes images and artifacts that can be used to help students explore some of the world’s major religions: Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism.

There are 2 options for these kits:
Option 1: A combo kit of 2 or 3 religions.
Option 2: A kit on just 1 religion.

6th Grade Standards: 6.G.1.2; 6.H.2.1; 6.H.2.4; 6.C.1.2
